Pathways to Leadership Program

The Pathways to Leadership program provides you with workshops and retreat to help develop and refine leadership skills, networking and community-building, and information to how to get involved on-campus and off-campus. You can either drop-in and attend one of the weekly workshops or quarterly retreats, or enroll in one of the Introductory or Advanced programs for CCR credit. You choose your own adventure! Learn more about the various programs and we hope to see you at a workshop or retreat!

Weekly Workshops

Each week, Muir College hosts a weekly workshop on various topics ranging from communication skills, career preparation, equity and social justice, working with others, and campus resources. Register here for the Winter 2023 workshops: Registration Link.

Week 2:  Social Change Model: From Me to We

Building Leadership Skills is not just about boosting a résumé, but a means to impact the world around us. The Social Change Model incorporates Group, Societal, and Individual Values in a purposeful and collaborative process. This session can broaden your perspective of Leadership and move one towards being a driving force for positive change.

Week 3:  All in this together: How to build success as a team

Whether we like them or not, group projects are an integral part of our studies. This session focuses on study tips and successfully navigating team dynamics. Learn how to work as a team and ace your next group project!

Week 4:  There’s No I in Team, but Sometimes There’s Conflict

Being a part of a group can bring a sense of community and togetherness, but sometimes even the strongest teams face some form of conflict and challenges. Join us as we talk about how to proactively mitigate conflict in groups and manage it when it does occur. Through interactive activities, learn more about your personal conflict management style and how to use tools like Restorative Justice practices.

Week 5:  Everything I Learned about Leadership, I Learned through Comic Books

Before there was the MCU, Assistant Dean Mario fell in love with all things comic books after watching an animated X-men series. And through comic books, TV shows, and movies, he was first introduced to concepts around leadership, teamwork, and EDI. Whether you are an avid comic book fan or not, join us for a fun session on leadership through the lens of comics and superheroes!

College and life demands a lot of us. The list of items you are attending to can go on and on. Join us as we discuss the importance of both self and collective care. We will share strategies and resources.

Join us as we use Gallup StrengthsFinder to learn about our individual strengths and team members' strengths. More importantly, how to build an environment for your team to work effectively together. Week 8: Women in Leadership

Panelists: Miranda Junn, VP Finance, Muir College Council; Dr. Jackie Duerr, Program Manager, Transfer Student Success; Dr. Brie Iatarola, Lecturer, Department of Communication; and Dr. Diane LeGree, Dean of Student Affairs, Sixth College

Learn more about what it means to be a woman in leadership from a panel of student, faculty, and staff leaders across campus! The goal of this workshop time is to not only meet women leaders, but also learn about their journey and experiences.

Retreats

  • Inspiring Muir Leadership Conference (Winter Quarter): Geared towards incoming first-year and transfer students and students interested in getting involved, this program is intended to providing introductory leadership skills, an introduction to equity and inclusion, and information on how to get involved in Muir College and on-campus. 
  • Muir Intercultural Retreat (Winter Quarter): 
    Open to both new and continuing students, this program provides an immersive experience on issues pertaining to equity and social justice through interactive activities and authentic dialogue. This year's retreat will be hybrid and split in two parts. Join us for one or both sessions and accrue hours for the Pathways to Leadership CCR program!

  • Muir Social Change Retreat (Spring Quarter) 
    Geared towards continuing students and graduating seniors, this program will further refine leadership skills, and participants will learn how to create change through their on-campus involvement or continue this work beyond the UC San Diego campus. 

Introductory (10-hour) Program

The Introductory "Pathways to Leadership" program is a 10-hour commitment:

  • Attendance at one-hour workshops
  • Attendance at the Inspiring Muir Leadership Conference (Fall Quarter)
  • Attendance at the Muir Intercultural Retreat (Winter Quarter)
  • Attendance at the Muir Social Change Retreat (Spring Quarter)

Advanced (30-hour) Program

The Advanced "Pathways to Leadership" program is a 30-hour commitment. From fall through the end of the summer quarters, students can gain hours in the following ways:

  • Attendance at the Inspiring Muir Leadership Conference (Fall Quarter)
  • Attendance at the Muir Intercultural Retreat (Winter Quarter)
  • Attendance at the Muir Social Change Retreat (Spring Quarter)
  • Join the Inspiring Muir Leadership Conference planning committee
