John Muir College Traditional Events

Muir College host a number of traditional events each year.  Below is a snapshot of some of our programs for our students to participate in over the course of the year!

Fall

  • Each fall, Muir College starts the year by welcoming our newest Muirons to campus with our in-person orientation sessions. These sessions are designed to provide new students the opportunity to learn first-hand what it means to be a Muiron, how to navigate campus, and to connect with each other, faculty, and staff.
  • The transition continues with Muir College Welcome Week. During the first week students are back on campus, we host a myriad of events including a student organization fair, movie night, dance in the Quad, and much more.
  • Just before classes begin, the Undergraduate Colleges compete for the coveted Golden Shoe in the annual UnOlympics competition.
  • Explore a variety of identities with our Cultural Conversations, which are focused on building community amongst individual identity populations, and First @ Muir, our first-generation college student programming.
  • Celebrate loved ones and the Latinx culture with our annual Día de Los Muertos celebration. We host musical and dance groups, enjoy delicious Latin flavors, and provide crafting opportunities to create your own ofrenda!

Winter

  • Share in the excitement of returning to campus with our Welcome Back Week during the first week of winter quarter. We host a variety of events for students to help get back into the swing of college life.
  • Show your Triton Pride and Muir Spirit during Spirit Week. Cheer on your Tritons to victory at Muir College night, test your knowledge with Triton Trivia, and chalk the walk with your favorite Muir inspired designs.
  • Celebrate with the Festival of Black Joy. Enjoy live performances, view work by black artists, and savour delicious food from black-owned restaurants in San Diego.

Spring

  • Celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander cultures with our You & API Festival. Enjoy live performances, community art displays, and traditional cultural activities while supporting local API-owned businesses.
  • Enjoy a weeklong event, Celebrating Muir College Week, featuring fun events and activities, educational programs, and a celebration of all things Muir.
  • Each spring, we host our very own music festival, Muirstock. Past performers have included Hotel Garuda, Hello Goodbye, and Imagine Dragons.
  • Academic accomplishments are recognized through the Caledonian Society. Named for the Latin name for Scotland and our namesake's heritage, the Caledonian Society is Muir College's senior honor society. Inductees have an average GPA above 3.8 and are inducted yearly.
  • Recognize the hard work and dedication of our student leaders each year with the annual Student Leadership Celebration. The event also reminds students of the many leadership opportunities available to them in Muir College including House Advisors, Orientation Leaders, Peer Advisors, Muiristas, and multiple Intern experiences.
  • The Senior Squad celebrates our graduating students with multiple events which have included MOM After Dark, Senior Toast, and a Senior trip to Disneyland. Events are planned and coordinated by students.
  • We end the academic year with Commencement, the day all students (and their families) are waiting for. Led in by a skilled group of Highlanders, graduating seniors process into RIMAC Field for the event that marks their final moment of their college career.
