Muir College Move Out 2025
Congratulations on making it through this year at Muir College! We wish you safe and healthy travels home. Below are instructions and information on how to move out of your space.
Residents can begin moving out WITHOUT having to apply to terminate their housing contract starting Saturday, May 31st. We strongly encourage students to begin moving their belongings as early as possible before Saturday, June 14th @ 3 pm.
The DEADLINE to completely move out of ALL MUIR COLLEGE buildings is Saturday, June 14th at 3pm.
Late Stay/Housing Exception Requests
If you are unable to move out of your Muir space by the deadline of 3pm on Saturday, June 14th then you must submit a housing extended stay request on your housing portal available now until Sunday, June 2nd at 11:59pm (NO EXCEPTIONS).
Extensions MAY be granted on a case-by-case basis this spring for the following reasons:
- If you are a graduating senior attending on-campus graduation ceremonies
- If you have early move in for Summer Housing (acceleRATE and Short Term Transitional Housing)
- Other reasonable requests to remain in your Muir space past June 14th at 3pm will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and you may be asked to provide verification of the reason for your late stay request.
NOTE: Completing this form does not secure or guarantee your extended stay request. You must get a confirmation email for it to be granted.
If you miss the deadline or the extended stay request is denied, you will have to vacate your unit by Saturday, June 14th at 3PM. Please have backup plans and alternate housing options as extended stay requests are not guaranteed to be granted.
Please plan on having backup options, such as hotel accommodations. Please refer to this resource for more information on off-campus hotel arrangements for UC San Diego.Move Out Preparation
Please remove all your belongings and clean your room to the best of your ability.
- All room windows and sliding glass doors must be cleared of tape, paint, and any other decorations. Be sure to close and lock your doors and windows when you depart.
- Please empty your trash can, recycling bin and remove all excess trash from your room. There must be one blue recycling bin and one trash can per resident left in your room. We highly recommend you vacuum your space if possible.
- All posters, pictures, memo boards, and other decorations must be removed from all walls, windows, and doors. The paint must be in its original condition. You will be charged for paint chips resulting from tape removal on your walls and any door for which you are responsible.
- Please remove all personal belongings from your house or apartment storage room, the balcony in your apartment, the kitchen, and the bathroom.
- All the furniture in your room and its original configuration at check-out must be the same as it was during the check-in process. You may be charged for leaving furniture in an inappropriate configuration. Any extra furniture or mini-fridges you put in your room during the academic year must be removed.
Moving Out and Express Check-Out
Only the resident and two helpers will be approved to be in any residential building for move-out.
After properly vacating their space, residents must complete the Express Check Out process for their contract to be properly terminated.
The instructions for the Express Check Out process are as follows:
- Locate the Muir Residential Life Office (bottom floor of the Tuolumne Apartments). To the right side of the bulletin board outside the office, you will find a small clear container that contains the EXPRESS CHECKOUT ENVELOPE you will need to fill out.
- Fill this envelope out to the best of your ability and seal it with YOUR METAL ROOM KEY INSIDE as well as any NON-ID plastic keycard (these keycards are either white or yellow). If you have lost your metal room key, simply write LOST ROOM KEY on the front of the envelope and your student account will be charged a $65 fee for a key replacement. Students will not be charged for lost plastic keycards. NOTE: If you do not fill out the express checkout envelope, you may be subject to a $45 improper checkout fee in addition to the $65 lost key charge.
- Drop off your envelope into the black express checkout box located in front of the Muir Res Life office and next to the small clear container.
- Remember to check your student mailbox one last time!
- Last, go to your HOUSING PORTAL and fill out the EXPRESS CHECK OUT FORM online. Once complete, you are done! Congratulations!
If you VACATED your space during the academic year and still have an ACTIVE housing contract while living at home, please complete the following information:
- Go to your HOUSING PORTAL and fill out the EXPRESS CHECK OUT FORM online.
- If you are not local to the San Diego area and cannot drop off your metal room key, then you have the option to mail it in along with any plastic, non-ID keycard you may have. When mailing your METAL room key to the office, you MUST place it in a PADDED envelope to the following address:
Muir Residential Life Office
9500 Gilman Drive. #0118
La Jolla, CA 92093-0118
If your envelope is not padded, we cannot guarantee that the post office will deliver your envelope with your key inside, and you may be subject to a $65 key replacement fee. Please mail your key by Monday, June 16 to avoid a key replacement fee being charged to your student account.
NOTE: Failure to not complete any of the procedures mentioned will be subject to an additional $45 improper checkout fee on top of any pre-existing damage charges.
Parking & Unloading Zones
Please visit UCSD's transportation website for the most up-to-date information on parking: https://transportation.ucsd.edu/parking/index.html
The closest parking structure to Muir College is Scholars Parking Structure (9655 Scholars Dr N, La Jolla, CA 92093). Parking during move out will be free.
During move-out the Muir campus will have designated 20-minute loading zones along South Scholars Dr. (behind Tioga and Tenaya) and Scholars Lane (Behind Tuolumne and Tamarack). Park in the areas where it's noted as a designated loading space to not block incoming and outgoing traffic.Damages
Please be aware that we will be charging for any excess cleaning or damages in Muir spaces, including common spaces. Please be considerate of your fellow suitemates and roommates and make sure to clean and remove all of your belongings. If you currently have damage in your space, please contact maintenance through the HDH Fix It Portal to have it fixed before you vacate.
Damages are assessed on an individual, room, and suite/apartment level. If there is damage reported in a bedroom, the residents of that bedroom will be held responsible. If a specific bed is damaged, the occupant of that bed will be held responsible. If there is damage in the suite lounge or hallway, members of that suite or suites will share the cost of the repair. The only exception to this is if a specific resident takes responsibility for a specific damage, in which case they would be held responsible for the repair. Please collect any mail you have before you leave campus! Following closing, Mail Services will forward all USPS items to the permanent address on file (US only) for 60 days. If you are going to be living anywhere other than your permanent address you should update your current address via Tritonlink. However, if this is not the case, DO NOT change your address until you are ready to begin receiving mail there.
Please contact studentmail@ucsd.edu directly for any package or mail concerns.Donations
