Fall 2020: Muir Move In 

Welcome to Muir College!  We are excited to see you in just a few short weeks.  Please follow the steps below carefully to prepare for a smooth and safe(r) move-in:    

First things first: Go to the My Room Assignment page to view your room assignment information. You must reserve your testing and move-in date and time by Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. (PST).

 

Planning and Packing

Pack essential items only. After moving in, purchase non-essential items online and ship them to campus through the Amazon Center  in the Price Center, or the Amazon Locker located next to the Muir mailboxes.  To send your Amazon parcels to the Muir Amazon Locker, go to www.amazon.com/findalocker  and search by Locker Name.  Select “Muir” as your shipping address.

Bring your own handcart if needed. Equipment and staff will be unavailable to physically assist to maintain a contact-free move-in process.

Mail services will begin after you move in.

  • Your address and mailbox number will be listed on your Qwik Pass.

Download a QR code reader on your mobile device for contact-free information exchange throughout the move-in process.

Download a map app (e.g. Google Maps) on your mobile device to help you navigate around campus.

Plan to arrive in one vehicle with no more than two members of your moving party in order to allow for physical distancing.

  • This will be enforced at check-in and unloading. Please email us if you need to request an exception.
  • Everyone must wear a face covering and maintain a physical distance of at least 6 feet.

Remember your Qwik Pass! Take a screenshot of your pass to show campus staff on the day of your move-in.

Enroll in the Daily Student Symptom and Exposure screening tool and begin Student Symptom and Exposure Screening every day. If you have symptoms of COVID-19 and are in the San Diego area you will be offered SARV-CoV-2 testing.  If you have symptoms and live outside of San Diego, seek care with your local provider. It is important that you are healthy when you arrive on campus.

If members of your moving party have symptoms consistent with COVID-19 on the day of move in, they will not be able to enter the residential buildings. 

 

Your Move-In Day

Arrive at the testing site at your scheduled time slot. Allow yourself ample time to navigate campus and account for traffic.  Testing will be held in Parking Lot P102 at Revelle College.  The resident must be in the front seat (either as a driver or in the front passenger seat) 

  • If you arrive after the testing site closes, you will not be permitted to move in until the testing center opens the following morning.  You will need to stay the night at a local hotel at your expense.  No exceptions will be made. 
  • You are not allowed to be in your space until you have officially done your COVID screening, have officially checked-in, picked up your key and access card.

After arrival you will receive a COVID-19 test, this will be done by a health care provider with an anterior nares swab collection. 

After testing, move to the staging area before being released to your residential community to check in for move-in.

Once you arrive at your residential area, you will have a total of 45 minutes for move in:

  • You will have 20 minutes to unload at your residential community via curbside unloading.
  • Unloading zones are limited and will be staffed and timing enforced
  • The balance of the 45 minutes should be used to drop off materials into your student’s room

Once you are parked, only the resident can go to the Muir Residential Life Office to pick up your e-lock access card, bedroom key and check-in. All other family/friends please remain in vehicle.  Please have your ID and QWIK pass on your phone (we suggest a screen shot). 

  • You and your move in party will need to be masked throughout the move in process and when moving about campus.Also please maintain physically distancing from others outside of your move in party.

Elevator use is restricted to one student or one student and their moving party at any given time.

In order to limit density on campus, your moving party must immediately leave campus following unloading.

Per State mandate, after move-in, only residents of a building and building staff will be permitted to enter that building.

 

Post Move in

Because SARS-CoV- 2, the virus which causes COVID-19, may not result in an infection for up to 14 days after an exposure and because young adults may not develop symptoms when they are infected and potentially infectious to others, we will be asking ALL students to follow additional precautions during the first few weeks after arrival to minimize the chance of any student inadvertently introducing virus into the community

  • After move in, within your residential unit you will need to continue to mask and maintain physical distance except when you are in your personal bedroom or the shower.  
  • After all students in the residential unit have been onsite for 12 days, you will be asked to retest for COVID-19. 
  • If everyone’s second test is negative, within your residential unit you will no longer need to wear masks or adhere to strict physical distancing.
  • Each day complete your daily symptom screen, if at any time you develop symptoms you will need to retest for COVID-19.  Should you test positive, you will be moved to isolation housing on campus until you recover and can return to your residential unit.
  • At all times when you are outside of your residential unit you should be masked and maintaining a physical distance with others.  To eat or exercise, you may remove your mask but you will need to maintain a distance from others of at least 6’.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What if I need to bring more than 2 other people with me during move in?
A: Please contact the Muir Residential Life Office at muirreslife@ucsd.edu with a email detailing why you need an exception to the 3 person limit. Please keep in mind that the 3 person limit is for persons OUTSIDE of your vehicle who will be accompanying you to your resident space. We will not be monitoring the number of people inside of your car. 

Q: Am I allowed to go home on the weekends or go to dinner with my family after I move in?
A: Testing and move in take place on the same day. Students will be tested and move in directly afterwards. Students are expected to remain on campus until all student test results are back. Therefore, to reduce the risk of new exposure, we are asking students to please stay in their resident space to ensure the test results are accurate. Q: What if I miss my COVID testing time?
A: Students who miss their scheduled move-in time and date will need to arrive at the testing site the following morning. Overnight stay options are available with local hotels at pre-negotiated rates. Students would be responsible for these costs.

Q: What if I can't arrive until AFTER Sept. 28, 2020 (the last official move in day)? 
A: Students moving in after Sept. 28 will need to quarantine in designated housing for 14 days prior to moving into their fall housing assignment. Students arriving after Sept. 28 must notify their Residence Life Office of their arrival date. Housing will send instructions on how to apply for the 14-day quarantine housing and information on signing up for a SARS-CoV-2 test on their 14th day. Results are available usually within 24-36 hours. If results are negative, students will be sent instructions on how to move into their fall housing assignment.
