Muir College Writing Program

Enrollment Information For IGETC/TAG Transfers

Because the purpose of the Muir College Writing Requirement is to prepare students for university writing, Muir College students are required to complete this requirement before upper-division course work is attempted; to this end, enrollment priority is given to first- and second-year students who have earned 90 units or fewer. All students enrolled in more than 90 units are blocked from enrolling via WebReg unless they are preauthorized by the Muir College Writing Program. Preauthorization allows a student with more than 90 units to enroll; it does not guarantee enrollment.

  • As an incoming Muir College transfer student you have likely already earned 90 units, or will go over 90 units as soon as you start enrolling in classes. All students with certified IGETC will be preauthorized to sign up for MCWP 50 or 125 during their first pass during their first 3 quarters at UCSD.
  • If you think you have IGETC, and it's not on your transcript, please contact UCSD Admissions and/or your community college. You will not be able to enroll in MCWP 50/125 until your IGETC has been posted.
  • If you have a certified IGETC, either MCWP 50 or MCWP 125 will fulfill the writing requirement. The primary advantage to MCWP 125 is that it gives you upper division credit.
  • We pull the information to preauthorize students in week 3. If anything has changed around or after that time (dropped MCWP class, IGETC posted), please let us know.
  • IF YOU DO NOT ENROLL IN MCWP 125 OR MCWP 50 DURING YOUR FIRST 3 QUARTERS, YOU MAY ONLY ENROLL IN EITHER COURSE DURING YOUR SECOND PASS. This means you will almost certainly be trying to get in from a waitlist.

Enrollment Information For non-IGETC Transfers

Because the purpose of the Muir College Writing Requirement is to prepare students for university writing, Muir College students are required to complete this requirement before upper-division course work is attempted; to this end, enrollment priority is given to first- and second-year students who have earned 90 units or fewer. All students enrolled in more than 90 units are blocked from enrolling via WebReg.

  • As an incoming Muir College transfer student you have likely already earned 90 units, or will go over 90 units as soon as you start enrolling in classes. All students are preauthorized for MCWP 40 unless otherwise indicated, e.g. by an approved petition.
  • Enrollment priority means you can enroll during your first pass. Transfer students receive 3 quarters of enrollment priority for each required course. This means if you petition a course successfully, you will have 3 quarters of priority starting from your first enrolled quarter. If you need MCWP 40 and 50, you have 6 quarters of priority.
  • If you have English Composition courses from a four-year institution, you might be able to petition out of MCWP 40 and/or 50. Please read our course petition procedure and contact the Muir Writing Program office.
  • We pull the information to preauthorize students in week 3. If anything has changed around or after that time (dropped MCWP class, IGETC posted), please let us know.
  • If you have completed the equivalent of the IGETC English Composition requirement, you might be able to petition out of MCWP 40 only. Please read our course petition procedure and contact the Muir Writing Program office.
  • IF YOU DO NOT ENROLL IN MCWP COURSES DURING YOUR PRIORITY PERIOD (first 3-6 quarters at UCSD), YOU MAY ONLY ENROLL IN THESE COURSES DURING YOUR SECOND PASS. This means you will almost certainly be trying to get in from a waitlist.
