A Farewell from Interim Provost Yang

Ten months ago, I had just gotten my keys to the Muir Provost Office. In there was a rusty can filled with cement - the 50 year old time capsule buried by the founding class. There are also sofas, often bathed in sunlight. A secret cabinet the contents of which are known only to a few individuals. And a nice hardwood desk. I'm told by former provost Susan Smith that it's Pat Ledden's personal desk - so it has good karma.

When I wasn't in meetings or doing some new administrative task poorly, I would crash the HA meetings, bother the Orientation Leaders, taste the food at Pines to experience the highs and lows of the undergraduate diet, and of course, spend time at Muir Woods Coffee House. I tried not to look desperate to make some friends. But I was. I awkwardly wanted to be part of the Muir spirit - call it independent, call it quirky, call it community.

The question I most often got this year was, "What exactly is a provost?" And I came up with a lot of different answers: "It's the faculty Head of College, like Albus Dumbledore". "It's the stuff you sprinkle on a pizza." Once I googled it on my cellphone, and found the definition from the Sixth College website, which I read aloud to the Orientation Leaders. Last week, I asked one of the college deans, and they told me, "The Provost is the conscience of the university." I liked that one the best.

In hindsight, I think the Provost is the most privileged position in the college - their main job is to believe in you, the Muir student, whatever and however you have come to understand that identity. For those of you who have stopped to introduce yourself, or talk to me in M.O.M., or to just smile in passing. Thank you. For the student who helped me with my armful of heavy bags. Thank you.

For those of you who have volunteered at Muirstock, or sang with the Mariachis at Dia de Los Muertos, or danced at the LLC, or tipped a glass at me at the senior reception on the patio at Mandeville Suite overlooking the Pacific Ocean, or dueled with us at croquet, or ate Haggis, or listened to the bagpipes, or wherever/whenever you gave me a chance to just admire you.

Thank you. For all of you who have allowed me to believe in you. Thank you. You made me a provost on that day.

To the seniors (and walkers who are not quite seniors ;) ) at Commencement 2018, I am thrilled to finish my job as Muir Acting Provost in your company.

With fondness,

K. Wayne Yang

Acting Provost John Muir College, 2017-18

Important Policy Change regarding Drop Deadline

The Academic Senate approved to change the withdrawal deadline from the end of Week 9 to the end of Week 6 for undergraduate students, effective Fall Quarter 2018. The deadline to drop a course or withdraw from the University without a “W” will remain the end of Week 4. Laboratory courses with early drop deadlines will continue to be noted in the Schedule of Classes.

Please see the enrollment and registration calendars at https://blink.ucsd.edu/instructors/courses/enrollment/calendars/index.html for deadline information.

If you are a financial aid recipient, contact the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office before withdrawing to determine how it might affect your financial aid awards; you may be billed for the return of financial aid funds received.

The Global Ambassadors Program (GAP) pairs one incoming international or out of state student with one current international or out of state student at UC San Diego. Mentors and mentees are paired in June and then communicate virtually all summer to assist with the incoming student's transition to UC San Diego. Then once everyone is back on campus in the fall, we celebrate with a GAP Mixer!

  • Becoming a GAP Mentor is a great leadership opportunity because:
    • It allows you to mentor and assist with incoming student's transition!
    • Occurs over the summer, and thus does not conflict with any academic year commitments!
    • Occurs virtually, so you can be anywhere in the world and still participate!
    • Takes place primarily over email/messaging, so it can be a great way to practice English skills!

MCC would like to open our Campus Improvements Committee to all Muir students. This group will identify ways to improve our community, from adding infrastructure to coordinating awareness campaigns.

While the group will first be asked to obtain umbrellas for the Muir quad, future projects will be determined by members.

If you’d like to be involved, come to one of our info sessions week 6 to hear a little more about our vision, and to share your own ideas!

In 2010, singer & composer Ravid Kahalani founded the eclectic collective of top musicians called Yemen Blues.

In this interactive workshop Ravid will talk about his roots and inspiration in forming Yemen Blues, as well as demonstrate and perform the instruments and sources of African and Blues music that are key to his sound. He feels strongly that through music you can connect cultures and people in powerful and unifying ways.

Week 3

John Muir College Newsletter | Fall 2017, Week 3

A Special Message for the Muir Community

Our feeds, radios and TVs continue to be filled with devastating news. Yet we want to emphasize that there are also stories of people supporting and caring for one another in community. Many of us at Muir have families or friends in northern California, Pacific Northwest and Montana who are coping with the devastating effects of the wildfires.

Many of our students are part of the vibrant, resettled community here in Little Mogadishu, San Diego - and are no doubt reeling from the horrific bombing in Mogadishu, Somalia. We trust that everyone will make Muir a supportive community for people impacted by disaster and violence. If you or someone you know is affected, please know that staff and colleagues at Muir College are here to help.

You can reach out to your House Advisors, your academic advisors, or the Muir staff and faculty to help you connect you to resources for affected students, staff and faculty or reach out directly to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to schedule free, confidential counseling.

John Muir College Newsletter | Fall 2017, Week 2

A Special Message to the Muir Community

It has been a season of many tragedies, of storms, and of human suffering. We are anguished by the horrific shooting in Las Vegas last Sunday. As the news about the injured and slain still continues to unfold, some of us are just learning about loved ones who are affected. People with connections to Las Vegas, or to Puerto Rico; people who have experienced similar violence or destruction; it may be hard to know what kind of support you may need in this time. If you or someone you know is affected, please know that staff and colleagues at Muir College are here to help.

John Muir College Newsletter | Fall 2017, Welcome Week

Celebrate 50 Years of John Muir College!

Come join us in celebrating John Muir College's 50th Anniversary as we open the time capsule left by the first graduating class! The reveal will take place on Monday, October 2nd, in the Muir Quad. We invite you to enjoy some food and fun as we kick-off a year filled with events in celebration of this momentous occasion. We hope to see you there!

Welcome to the start of the 2017- 2018 Academic Year!

Let’s make this a safe and productive year!

Whether you are a new Muiron or a continuing student, new beginnings always carry with it some excitement and promise. Start with the end in mind and identify 3-5 goals you hope to accomplish this year. Whose help will you need? What steps do you need to take? Write them down in a place you’ll see frequently, then stick to the plan!

With the start of this school year I want to communicate a few important messages.

What sets the Muir community apart is our continual ability to care for one another. The strength of our community is proportional to the responsibility each one of us takes for each other’s wellbeing. If you or a friend you know appears to be having a difficult time or seems to be distressed don’t ignore the problem! Talk to your friend about your concerns, listen, and encourage them to get help. Know that you are never alone and there are a lot of places to turn for assistance: House Advisors, Academic Advisors, Residential Life Staff, Student Affairs Staff and Counseling and Psychological Services or call 858-534-3755. If it is an emergency call campus police 858-534-4357 (HELP). Sometimes the hardest thing a person can do is to ask for help, but it can also be the most important thing you can do to for yourself or for a friend.

If you notice a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable, remember the UCSD Bystander Intervention Model and employ IDEAS!

  • Interrupt
  • Distract
  • Engage Peers
  • Authorities
  • Safety

Follow this link for more information on BIT.

Lastly, in situations where you or a friend find yourself in need of medical assistance due to an alcohol or drug related emergency remember the Responsible Action Protocol. Students receiving medical assistance in an alcohol or drug related emergency and students, initiating medical assistance, may not be processed through the Office of Student Conduct and may not receive a conduct record. Don’t let the fear of “getting into trouble” prevent you from getting help for you or your friend. Conditions do apply and I invite you to review the full policy at www.studentconduct.ucsd.edu.

On behalf of the entire College, I wish you all a safe and productive academic year!
