A Special Message to the John Muir College Community

Dear Muir Students,

Wildfires continue to impact the state of California, and we know that this has likely impacted many of you during this already stressful time at the end of the quarter.  Please know that Muir staff are here to support you.  If you, your friends, or your family have been impacted by the fires, please let us know so that we can connect you with resources and provide academic assistance, if needed. Helping us stay informed about your personal circumstances is one way to be proactive about supporting the Muir community.

Muir staff have been in conversation with the campus Emergency Management Team, and we are reviewing our Emergency Action Plans. Please pay attention to emails from the Vice Chancellor of Resource Management and Planning, and to Triton alerts. Also please familiarize yourself with the nearest emergency meeting points near your classrooms, residence halls, and frequented buildings.

For assistance, please either respond to this message or call the Muir College Office of Student Affairs at (858) 534-3587.  We are here for you.

Take care,

Wayne Yang

Week 3

John Muir College Newsletter | Fall 2017, Week 3

A Special Message for the Muir Community

Our feeds, radios and TVs continue to be filled with devastating news. Yet we want to emphasize that there are also stories of people supporting and caring for one another in community. Many of us at Muir have families or friends in northern California, Pacific Northwest and Montana who are coping with the devastating effects of the wildfires.

Many of our students are part of the vibrant, resettled community here in Little Mogadishu, San Diego - and are no doubt reeling from the horrific bombing in Mogadishu, Somalia. We trust that everyone will make Muir a supportive community for people impacted by disaster and violence. If you or someone you know is affected, please know that staff and colleagues at Muir College are here to help.

You can reach out to your House Advisors, your academic advisors, or the Muir staff and faculty to help you connect you to resources for affected students, staff and faculty or reach out directly to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to schedule free, confidential counseling.

A Special Message to the Muir Community

It has been a season of many tragedies, of storms, and of human suffering. We are anguished by the horrific shooting in Las Vegas last Sunday. As the news about the injured and slain still continues to unfold, some of us are just learning about loved ones who are affected. People with connections to Las Vegas, or to Puerto Rico; people who have experienced similar violence or destruction; it may be hard to know what kind of support you may need in this time. If you or someone you know is affected, please know that staff and colleagues at Muir College are here to help.

Week 0

John Muir College Newsletter | Fall 2017, Welcome Week

Celebrate 50 Years of John Muir College!

Come join us in celebrating John Muir College's 50th Anniversary as we open the time capsule left by the first graduating class! The reveal will take place on Monday, October 2nd, in the Muir Quad. We invite you to enjoy some food and fun as we kick-off a year filled with events in celebration of this momentous occasion. We hope to see you there!

Welcome to the start of the 2017- 2018 Academic Year!

Let’s make this a safe and productive year!

Whether you are a new Muiron or a continuing student, new beginnings always carry with it some excitement and promise. Start with the end in mind and identify 3-5 goals you hope to accomplish this year. Whose help will you need? What steps do you need to take? Write them down in a place you’ll see frequently, then stick to the plan!

With the start of this school year I want to communicate a few important messages.

What sets the Muir community apart is our continual ability to care for one another. The strength of our community is proportional to the responsibility each one of us takes for each other’s wellbeing. If you or a friend you know appears to be having a difficult time or seems to be distressed don’t ignore the problem! Talk to your friend about your concerns, listen, and encourage them to get help. Know that you are never alone and there are a lot of places to turn for assistance: House Advisors, Academic Advisors, Residential Life Staff, Student Affairs Staff and Counseling and Psychological Services or call 858-534-3755. If it is an emergency call campus police 858-534-4357 (HELP). Sometimes the hardest thing a person can do is to ask for help, but it can also be the most important thing you can do to for yourself or for a friend.

If you notice a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable, remember the UCSD Bystander Intervention Model and employ IDEAS!

  • Interrupt
  • Distract
  • Engage Peers
  • Authorities
  • Safety

Follow this link for more information on BIT.

Lastly, in situations where you or a friend find yourself in need of medical assistance due to an alcohol or drug related emergency remember the Responsible Action Protocol. Students receiving medical assistance in an alcohol or drug related emergency and students, initiating medical assistance, may not be processed through the Office of Student Conduct and may not receive a conduct record. Don’t let the fear of “getting into trouble” prevent you from getting help for you or your friend. Conditions do apply and I invite you to review the full policy at www.studentconduct.ucsd.edu.

On behalf of the entire College, I wish you all a safe and productive academic year!

Interim Dean of Student Affairs, Muir College
