Congratulations on your admission to Muir College, UCSD for Winter Quarter 2009! We hope that you will choose to join our friendly and supportive community. Winter admission may seem a bit unusual, but we promise to make it a positive experience in all of the ways that we can.

Below you will find links to a variety of information, academic and otherwise, that may be helpful to you as you consider planning to attend UCSD. We will update this section as additional information becomes relevant. In the meantime, bask in the knowledge that Muir College wants YOU!

ACADEMIC ADVISING

Orientation: An invitation to the Orientation Program designed specially for Winter 2009 freshmen will be mailed in early November.

Muir College General Education: The better you understand our General Education requirements, the better prepared you will be! Some Community College courses can be used towards meeting these requirements.

Transferable Community College Courses: If you choose to attend UCSD, we encourage students to enroll in fall classes at a community college. The ASSIST website will help you find which courses are UC-transferable, and can be applied towards Muir General Education or major requirements. For instructions on how to use ASSIST, click one of the following for the ASSIST Overview: (1.52MB Powerpoint presentation),(1.33MB zipped Powerpoint presentation), or (1.64MB PDF file.)

Recommended Community College Courses: For those students who plan to take courses at their local community college in fall, Muir Advising has put together a list of suggested courses. Please keep in mind that we advise students to enroll in no more than 3 courses during the fall quarter/semester. To view this list of recommended courses, click here: Fall Courses (48KB MS Word .doc file), Fall Courses (90KB PDF).

Transcripts and AP Scores: Please send all of your AP scores and an official transcript from any community college attended to UCSD Admissions. Do not submit community college transcripts until AFTER your grades have been finalized. Send transcripts to:

Admissions and Relations with Schools-Processing Unit
University of California, San Diego
9500 Gilman Drive #0021
La Jolla, CA 92093-0021.

AP and IB Score Charts: Use the AP chart and/or the IB chart to identify the units and UCSD course credit you will receive for certain passing scores on Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams that you took in high school.

Placement Tests: These tests are very important to your ability to enroll in the appropriate level course. Math and Writing are especially crucial.

MATH: If you have questions about the Math Placement Exam, dates and other information can be found here - http://testing.ucsd.edu/.

ENTRY LEVEL WRITING: Information about the Analytical Writing Placement Exam is available online. Please take this test in May, if at all possible.

CHEMISTRY: A Chemistry online placement exam is also available and recommended if you plan to take General Chemistry at UCSD. This is especially important for students who are placed into Basic Chemistry (CHEM 4) at UCSD, since that course is only offered in Fall Quarter. Students who place into CHEM 4 and plan on pursuing a science major should take an equivalent quarter/semester at a community college in Fall.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE: Online language placement exams are required for students who plan to take French, German, Italian, & Spanish. *Students who have passing AP or IB scores for Chemistry or any of these languages, do not need to take the placement exams.

Academic Major Course Requirements: If you have declared a major, use this alphabetical index to find your department's homepage and spend some time researching the coursework required.

Finish-in-Four Quarter by Quarter Guides: Use these guides to explore the various majors offered by UCSD and/or to see a sample quarter-by-quarter progression for taking classes required by a major you have chosen. Even though you are starting in Winter quarter, you will notice that most 4-year plans suggest that students spend the majority of their first year, in particular the Fall quarter, completing GE and lower division major requirements. GE courses are easily found at community colleges, and lower division major courses are often offered every quarter or at least twice a year at UCSD.

Housing: On campus housing is not guaranteed for Freshmen admitted for Winter 2009. However, students can apply to be on the Housing Waitlist beginning on November 3rd at 8:00am. For more information please visit http://hds.ucsd.edu/housing/waitlist.asp

It might be helpful to spend some time on the Off-Campus Housing website as well, to familiarize yourself with housing available near the UCSD campus.

Financial Aid: The Student Financial Services Office (SFS) carefully evaluates all aid applications, and checks all types of assistance for which you may be eligible. They will prepare and send you a Preliminary Award Notification by late March (if you met all application deadlines). More precise offers are mailed starting in May, once your aid file is complete.
