John Muir College - Celebrating the Independent Spirit

Faculty

All faculty at UC San Diego are affiliated with one of its six undergraduate colleges as are all UC San Diego’s undergraduate students. Muir College is fortunate in having many faculty who care deeply about the college and its mission and have been active in its affairs for many years.

The colleges at UC San Diego were the visionary idea of the university’s founding faculty, who intended them to give undergraduate students something of the experience of a small liberal arts college while having all the educational advantages of a large research university. The colleges give UC San Diego students choices as to how they will fulfill their General Education requirements and the kind of small campus community with which they will be affiliated.

The faculty of Muir College established General Education and graduation requirements for Muir students at the time of the college’s founding and makes changes to those requirements as necessary. In accordance with the College’s by-laws, the faculty is represented by an elected six-member Faculty Executive Committee which advises the Provost, takes action on academic policies and other matters of concern to the faculty, and appoints other faculty committees as needed. Any changes to the by-laws voted on by the faculty as a whole. The Writing Advisory Committee advises the Director of the Muir College Writing Program on matters relating to the College’s writing requirement and participates in the hiring and review of MCWP professional staff.

The Muir faculty normally meets once a year, in the Spring. The Provost – also a Muir faculty member – shares College news twice a year, Fall and Spring, by electronic newsletter.

Membership on College committees such as the Faculty Executive Committee and Writing Advisory Committee counts as university service which is necessary for promotion and merit advancement. For many faculty, college service is a rewarding, even enjoyable, way to fulfill this requirement. In addition to committee service, faculty help out the College by discussing their research with students at the Fall Freshman Honors Seminar, having lunch with prospective Honors students on Scholars Day, and in many other ways. We are truly grateful to everyone who contributes to our efforts to make UCSD a stimulating and rewarding place for undergraduate students.
