Frequently Asked Questions

Below are a list of frequently asked questions.  More information can be found on the all campus commencement page.

When will I get a mailing from the college regarding commencement?

All commencement information is provided on the college website. Students are advised to check the commencement website periodically to find the most current information as circumstances may change. If you have further questions, please contact Muir College at (858) 534-3587.

How soon do I need to fill out my Degree and Diploma Application (DDA) form online?

If you would like your name to appear in the commencement program, the deadline to file your DDA online is May 1, 2017.

Please note that the commencement program will only list names of students who have submitted their DDA for FA16, WI17, SP17, or SU17.

If you will be submitting your FA17 DDA, your name will be included in next year's commencement program. However, you are still invited to participate in the 2017 commencement ceremony.

I filed my DDA online, now what do I have to do? Do I need to sign-up anywhere to participate in the ceremony?

No, you do not have to sign up anywhere to participate in the ceremony. You will need to print your own ticket from the website that you registered for Commencement on.  That ticket will admit you to the John Muir College ceremony – and ONLY the Muir College ceremony.

I'm not going to complete all my units by the end of summer quarter. Can I still walk in the ceremony? What if I don’t complete my units until Fall Quarter?

Yes, you may participate in the commencement ceremony. Any student with 135 units by the end of Winter Quarter is eligible to participate in the 2017 commencement ceremony.

How do I know if I'm listed in the printed commencement program?

The only way to be placed in the printed commencement program is to have filed your DDA with the Muir College Academic Advising Office. If you file a DDA by May 1, your name will appear in the printed commencement program as it appears on your student record.

I'm not a Muir student but I have friends at Muir and I want to walk with them . What can I do?

If you are not a Muir student, you will NOT be allowed to participate in the Muir ceremony. Each UC San Diego college requires that graduates participate in their own college ceremony. Only Muir College graduates with the appropriate ticket will be allowed into the graduate area. If you wish to request for a commencement exception, visit the commencement website for instructions and considerations.

How many tickets may I get for my family and friends for graduation?

There are NO tickets needed for guests to attend the Muir College Commencement ceremony. However, because seating is limited, we ask that students have no more than 6 seated guests. Seating is first-come, first-served. It is suggested that students inform family and friends to be courteous to those who may need seating.

How do I audition to become the student speaker at commencement?

Auditions occur at the beginning of Spring Quarter. Please check back at future time for audition dates.

What is the All Campus Commencement?

A campuswide commencement featuring an internationally-renowned speaker will be held in tandem with the undergraduate and graduate school ceremonies. We invite all graduates, families and friends to attend both ceremonies to fully experience the pomp and circumstance, and joy and pride, that marks one of the most memorable times in a student’s life. This two-part celebration will include the 90-minute All Campus Commencement during which Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla will officially confer degrees by academic division upon graduates gathered as one student body on RIMAC Field. In addition, the six undergraduate colleges, Graduate Division and professional schools will host personalized Graduation Ceremonies for their students, where graduates will be recognized by name as they walk across the stage. We can’t wait to celebrate with you! Learn more at
