UC Entry Level Writing Requirement
The UC Entry Level Writing Requirement may be satisfied in one of the following ways:
- a score of 680 or higher on the SAT II-W Writing Exam
- a score of three or higher on the Advanced Placement Test in English
- pass the Analytical Writing Placement Exam
- complete a college credit composition course with a grade of "C" or higher prior to the first quarter of attendance at UCSD.
- Complete SDCC 1 English 64 (a Mesa College course taught at UCSD) and earn a grade of "C" or higher in addition to passing the UCSD final exit examination in the same quarter.
Any student who has not satisfied the Subject A requirement prior to enrollment at UCSD must satisfy it during the first year at UCSD by taking SDCC English 64 (a Mesa College course taught at UCSD) and earn a grade of "C" or higher in addition to passing the final exit examination in the same quarter.
American History and Institutions
Graduation from a California High School with an American History course normally clears this requirement. However, if you have not fulfilled this requirement, please refer to the current UCSD catalog online for a list of appropriate courses at: http://www.ucsd.edu/catalog/.
Upper-Division Course Requirement
Complete a total of eighteen four-unit upper division courses, or seventy-two upper division units.
U.S. Cultural Diversity Requirement
One four-unit course that explores the diversity of U.S culture is required for graduation from Muir College.

Graduation Units
To fulfill college, major, and graduation requirements, students need to complete a minimum of 180 quarter units for a B.A. or a B.S. degree. There is a maximum of 200 units for a B.A. or B.S. degree with the exception of engineering B.S. degrees which allow students a maximum of 230 units.
Residency
Complete thirty-six of your last forty-five units as an enrolled Muir College student.
Pass/Not Pass Grade Option
A student may take 25% (1/4) of UCSD courses on a P/NP basis with the exception of all major-related courses and most minor courses. Please check with your major department for restrictions or exceptions within your major.
College Honors at Graduation
Latin honors are awarded campus wide by the colleges at graduation to those students who have completed 80 graded units at the University of California. Latin honors ranges are determined each year and are based on the top 14% of grade point averages from last year's graduates. Summa cum laude is accorded to the top 2%, magna cum laude to the next 4% and cum laude to the following 8%.
2007-2008 Latin Honors (80 UC letter-graded units required)
Cum Laude: 3.633 - 3.785
Magna Cum Laude: 3.786 - 3.907
Summa Cum Laude: 3.908 - 4.000
Major Requirements
Declare a major by the time you accumulate ninety quarter units. Complete the prerequisites and the upper division coursework in a departmental major. Normally, twelve to fifteen upper-division courses taken for a letter grade will be required to complete a major; some majors will require additional upper division courses. A minimum grade-point average of 2.0 must be attained in the major. Please see your major department for the most up-to-date information regarding specific requirements.
