Study Abroad as a Muir Student

Through the campus Education Abroad Program (EAP), Opportunities Abroad Program (OAP), and Global Seminars, you may find opportunities to study, work, volunteer or complete an internship in locations around the world while earning credit toward your degree.

Why Study Abroad?

  • International experience can improve your career options.
  • Study abroad is correlated to higher graduation rates for participants.
  • Opportunities exist for students in all majors.
  • Opportunities exist for students of all language levels.
  • Programs exist for full year, one semester, or for the summer.
  • Programs are affordable, and may be covered by financial aid and scholarships.
  • You can still graduate on time—our advisors will work with you to include study abroad in your long-term plans.

How Do I Get Started?

  • Go to the Study Abroad “Start Your Journey” page to complete an online First Steps program, research programs, and learn about funds available for study abroad.
  • Follow up with the Programs Abroad Office advisor to narrow down your choices.
  • Meet with a major advisor to discuss how your courses abroad may apply to your major.
  • Visit the Muir College Academic Advising Office to help review the impact of study abroad on your other degree requirements.

What Requirements Can I Complete While Abroad?

  • Carefully selected courses may be petitioned for major requirements.
  • Some international courses may apply to your Muir General Education sequences.
  • Any transferable units completed while abroad will count toward the required 180 units for graduation, and any upper-division units will count for the required 72 upper-division units for graduation.

What Will It Cost?

  • Generally, study on EAP or OAP will be comparable to the cost of study at UCSD. In some cases, it may even be less.
  • EAP students pay UC fees and continue to receive UC financial aid while abroad.
  • OAP students may retain some or all of their funding while abroad, though the cost of OAP programs can vary widely.
  • The cost of living in some countries may be lower than the cost of living in La Jolla!
  •  Muir has its own study abroad scholarship just for our students. This opportunity is for programs beginning Summer 2017 or Fall 2017.
