Difference between June and September Orientation?

June Orientations are two-day sessions in which students stay overnight in the residence halls.

September Orientations are one-day sessions with condensed versions of the activities and information sessions of June Orientations.  Students who attend Orientation is September are eligible for Early Move-In in which they can move into the residence halls for the school year, one day before their Orientation date.  This is NOT arranged by the college, but with Campus Housing. Since enrollment takes place in late August - early September, September Orientation students are encouraged to view our Enrollment Tutorial Video.

Class registration dates/times are independent of which sessions students attend.  Thus there is no advantage in terms of class registration day/time in attending June Orientation over September.

Course recommendations and online advising for all students will be released mid August.  You will be able to submit questions and concerns to academic advisors starting then.

What time is Orientation?

June sessions: Check-in begins at 1:00 p.m. on Day One of your session and will end at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Day Two.

September session: will begin check-in at 8:30 a.m. and end at approximately 5 p.m.

What If I arrive on campus early?

Orientation check-in is at 1pm for June Orientations and 8:30am for September Orientations.  If you arrive early we encourage you to walk around the campus and familiarize yourself with UCSD.
If you arrive on campus before the parking attendants are available to issue permits, you will need to purchase a parking permit so that you do not receive a parking ticket.

Some points of interest include the
Price Center, where you can purchase food for lunch (which is not included on Day 1) as well as visit the UCSD bookstore, and Geisel Library.  As you walk around take note of the Stuart Art Collection pieces spread throughout the campus.

How do I get there?

Click here for directions to campus. Please note that we are anticipating road closures due to construction. We will have signage leading from the designated parking lot to Orientation check-in.  Additional, details are still being determined.  Please check back regularly for updated information.

What about Parking?

Complimentary parking permits will be provided by a member from UCSD Parking & Transportation Services at the entrance of the Pangea parking Structure beginning at 12:15pm for June Orientations and 7:15am for September Orientations.  After parking, please follow signs for "Muir College Orientation" to the Orientation Check-In area located in front of McGill Hall.

The parking grace period is from 12:00pm-2:00pm for June Orientations and 7:00am-9:00am for September Orientations.  If you arrive on campus before the parking grace periods, you will need to purchase a parking permit so that you do not receive a parking ticket.

Muir College is not responsible for parking tickets you might receive.

Will there be food at Orientation?

Yes, we will provide dinner on the first day, and breakfast and lunch on the second day.

Where will I be housed at Orientation?

All students who attend the June Orientation programs are required to stay on campus overnight.  Students will be housed in Tioga Hall, a residence hall for first year Muir College students.

This is a fun chance to see what it will be like to live on campus during the school year and for commuter students it is an opportunity to stay in the residence halls for a night.

Since September Orientations are 1-day sessions, lodging is not included or required for the September Orientation programs. However, an "Early Move-In" option is available through Housing•Dining•Hospitality to students with a housing contract attending September Orientation. This option is only available when viewing your room assignment information in mid-August.  If you choose to move into on-campus housing early, we suggest that your official move-in day be on Tuesday, September 18th if attending Session 4 or on Wednesday, September 19th if attending Session 5.  Early move-in costs are $45/day prior to the start of the housing contract which is Saturday, September 22nd, 2018.

You must select your "Early Move-In" date if you want to take advantage of an early arrival. You will receive more information in your Muir College Welcome Letter from the Muir Residential Life Office.  If you DO NOT make arrangements for the "Early Move-In" option, you will not be able to stay on campus prior to your official move-in time on Saturday, September 22nd. This means you will NOT have lodging for the evenings after your Orientation session. Please make appropriate arrangements. For local hotel information click here.

Where will my family member(s) be staying?

Lodging is not offered through the Family Orientation Program. All lodging accommodations for family members must be on your own. Lodging options in the La Jolla area can be found at: http://muir.ucsd.edu/about/families/hotel.html

What should I bring to Orientation?

As we will have Orientation related materials ready for you, a few items we suggest you bring are your check-in information, a reusable water bottle, a light jacket (as some meals and activities will be outdoors), comfortable walking shoes, snacks, and sunscreen.

For June Orientations, we provide towels, sheets and one pillow for your overnight stay.  Don't forget to bring your own toiletries!

When do I pay for Orientation?

Students: Orientation will be billed along with your Fall Quarter’s tuition which is available on TritonLink in September.  Payment for Fall quarter is DUE on September 21st. If you receive Financial Aid, you will be able to use it towards the Orientation fee as well as your quarterly tuition.
