University / GE / Major / Graduation Requirements

You must complete all of your University, GE, Major, and Graduation Requirements in order to officially graduate from Muir College and UCSD.
All of the University, GE, and Graduation (listed under 'Additional Requirements' under University Requirements) are listed on our Degree Requirements page.
Major requirements can be found on respective major pages.

GE = General Education = College Requirements.

Students can view 4 Year Plans for their specific major as well as utilize Tritonlink's WebReg and the Schedule of Classes to preliminarily plan a Fall quarter schedule.

Muir Writing (MCWP 40 & MCWP 50)

AP/IB Credits

To view what courses you received credit for with your AP scores, refer to our AP/IB Chart.

Remember to have your official scores sent to UC San Diego.

--

Freshman Standing: 0-44 Units
Sophomore Standing: 45-89 Units
Junior Standing: 90-134 Units
Senior Standing: 135+ Units

Registration day and times are based on seniority, thus the more units you have, the earlier your registration time will be.  For students with priority registration, your registration time will be the first day that registration starts.

--

You may use AP scores towards your GE requirements if the courses you get credit for are applicable.  For example, if you receive a 3, 4, or 5 on the AP History: United States Exam, you receive credit for "Any two courses in the HILD 2A,B,C sequence" of the Humanities area for Area III: Fine Arts, Foreign Language, or Humanities.  Thus, you will only need to take any one of HILD 2A,B,C to complete the three courses for the sequence.  This applies specifically to the AP History: United States Exam so please check the AP/IB Chart for information on all other AP courses.

Registering For Classes

Incoming Freshman students do not register for classes until late August.  The specific day and time will become available August 1st on Tritonlink.

E-Advising as well as Fall Quarter course recommendations from Academic advisors will become available August 14th on the New Student Site.

--

Students can view 4 Year Plans for their specific major as well as utilize Tritonlink's WebReg and the Schedule of Classes to preliminarily plan a Fall quarter schedule.

Prepare by reviewing how to use the UCSD Schedule of Classes and how to enroll in your classes by viewing the WebReg Enrollment Tutorial in TritonLink.

--

Waitlists: Students are not advised to waitlist for more than one course. Refer to the waitlist information on TritonLink if you need to waitlist a course.

Textbooks: Click the book icon on the schedule of classes next to the desired class to see what textbooks you will need.  Check the UCSD Bookstore for availability and options.

Lower Division vs. Upper Division

Lower division classes are labeled 1-99 and upper division classes are 100-199.

Lower division are mostly prerequisite or intro classes.
Upper division classes are more in depth and focused.

--

You are allowed to take upper division classes at any point in your college career -- even as a freshman (if the course doesn't require upper division standing), as long as you have completed the prerequisites.

--

Lower division standing is defined as having a cumulative of less than 90 units (Freshman & Sophomore standing).
Upper division standing is defined as have a cumulative of 90+ units (Junior & Senior standing).

Taking Summer Session Classes

Incoming students are allowed to take classes during the Summer Sessions prior to Fall quarter.  Check out the Summer Session page for more information on applying and enrolling.

First Day of The Quarter and Week "0"

You may have noticed on UCSD Academic Calendars that there is a distinction between '___Quarter Begins' and 'Instruction Begins.'
The first day of classes is always on the date listed for 'Instruction Begins.' The '___ Quarter Begins' is more for administrative and business purposes.

Week "0" only takes place in Fall quarters.  It refers to the days between when 'Fall Quarter Begins' and 'Instruction Begins.'
'Fall Quarter Begins' usually takes place on a Monday and 'Instruction Begins' (for Fall Quarter specifically) usually takes place on a Thursday.
This days between are also known as Welcome Week when numerous activities take place all over campus!
